Posterous Spotlight: Pattern Recognition
This week's spotlight is on Joie Reinstein for her trendspotting fashion blog Pattern Recognition, which she started in light of a tough job market last year. Thanks to her Posterous blog, Joie proved she belonged in the fashion industry and was able to find a full time job as a Digital Content and Trend Editor at Fashion Snoops.
What was the inspiration behind Pattern Recognition?
I started Pattern Recognition after my 1st semester at Parsons the New School for Design. I had taken a trendspotting class and I was compelled to start my own trend forecasting blog as I wanted an outlet to share my ideas. I also realized the importance of personal branding since I'm on the marketing side of fashion and not design.
Tell us a little about the Radicant Fashion Project.
When I finished school last year, the economic situation in New York City was dire. NO ONE I knew was getting hired in the fashion industry and it was extremely frustrating. I decided that instead of hanging around for several months being depressed, I would do something personally fulfilling that would hopefully who my abilities. So I dropped everything, packed up my bags and travelled around the world for 5 months taking pictures and doing interviews.
What was your favorite destination from the cities you traveled to?
I loved the city of Fukuoka in southern Japan: hard to pronounce and completely off the beaten path, it is an amazing city of 1.5 million people. Not only is it the Ramen capital of the world (Hakata style) but it also has a beautiful beach and some of the best street style I've ever seen. Also it was pretty hilarious, because people kept doing double takes and staring at me in the street. Finally someone kindly informed me that I resembled Angela Aki, a half Japanese, half American J-Pop singer!
You seem to have nailed trend forecasting from different cultures - what's your favorite emerging style?
Thank you! I try to have an anthropological approach to fashion which has more to do with the personal style of people rather then brands. My favorite emerging trend is something I'm calling "Dark 60s" which is a sort of mash-up of beatnik, mod and rockabilly. It's very rebellious and moody and works for both men and women. I'm also obsessed with polka dots which were huge in Asia this winter. I think they will take over the western world this summer.
And finally, how would you describe your own fashion style?
My style is truly global. You'll often find me wearing pants from Copenhagen, a jacket from Tokyo, jewelry from Rio and shoes from Paris. I'm definitely the most inspired by Japanese Fashion though. I love their fearless way of dressing and this trip has encouraged me to be more audacious in my sartorial choices. After all, I'm in Fashion, it comes with the territory ;-)

Small Businesses: Start Your (Marketing) Engines
If you're a realtor, restaurant owner or consultant, you already know that email marketing is a great way to keep your customers and prospects coming back. But finding the time to format your email newsletters - let alone figuring out how to use yet another online service - can be next to impossible.
Now you can automatically send your posts to customers and prospects as instant email newsletters. Here's how it works.
Step 1: Add your customers' email addresses as subscribers via the 'People' tab.
Step 2: There is no step two. It's that simple.
Once your customers confirm their subscriptions, they’ll automatically receive an email each time you post. The email will appear as if it's coming from you, and the title of your post will be the subject line of your email. And don't worry about clunky attachments - all photos will appear inline with the rest of your content.
Worried about getting stuck in spam filters? So are we. That's why we've partnered with a leading email provider to ensure your emails end up in your customers' inboxes. And yes, anyone visiting your site can sign up to your email subscription list at any time.
Looking for a way to manage the emails you receive from other Posterous sites? Visit our new subscription management page. Stay tuned for more email marketing improvements including new ways to control when your newsletters are sent and to customize how they look. As usual, we'd love to hear what you think.
